With bike level and following Hondas idle 3-5 minutes then shut down and wait 3 minutes, push in dipstick but don't screw it in yady yady yada oil level appears to be above the top mark. Yes, I did drain the oil completely ...
Chicago-Spike. You should change your fork oil every 2 or 3 years at least. If yours has never been changed, get ready for a long weekend of flushing out the dirt and gunk that will be sitting on the bottom. I just filled mine using Honda's oil, I just used the jack to hold the bike upright with the wheels on the ground. I used the bottle the oil came in and slowly added the oil a pump or two at a time after I knew I had over 3 oz in the final. I filled it until the oil strarted to flow over the threads.

This can be caused by various things including low oil level, failed oil pump, blocked oil passages and a failed oil pressure sensor. Running an engine when the oil pressure light is on is a recipe for disaster.

+1 to everything mentioned. The 1800s don't mention any oil change in manual till 4k miles. The 1300s want you in for that 600 mile service. Go till 600 miles, do your own dino oil change with filter. Hit 4k and go synthetic. Don't want to mention any brands of the stuff. Lots and lots and lots of oil/filter stuff here.

I have owned several shaft drive bikes, and never had to do more than just change the oil and lube splines at the final drive. I looked at the service manual, and all it shows is change the final drive oil every 24,000 miles.

The 10W-40 should provide great protection all year round. The first number in the case of your car 0W-30 is just an emphirical number and is only true till the engine warms up then it is a 30 weight oil. Here is page 80 from an 02 1800VTX/R on changing oil. Level surface, start engine and run for 3 to 5 minutes. Oil light goes off. Stop engine and wait 2 - 3 minutes. Remove dipstick and wipe clean. Hold Bike In upright Position. Insert dipstick until it seats but do not screw it in. The engine oil installed in the bike by Honda is crude oil based not synthetic and probably so is the final drive oil. I think you will be fine with "mineral oil" vs. synthetic and others have said that the specific weight you have is okay (I know nothing about the weight issue).
